Inspired by a dream, I realised the design of this home while overseas in South Asia. Enamoured with the boat houses on a lake there, I loved the concept of a heavy hull below with an almost floating element above, so I began sketching the concept of this home. It was important to include some organic elements hence the timber louvres that separate the windows. Below the limestone base sits vertical elements that offer a view of the moat that surrounds it so one feels they are always floating on water.
The master bedroom is a beautiful suite and it separates the bath from the ensuite to opposite ends of the bedroom. This allows the occupants to become a part of the bedroom while bathing, which is ultimately the experience offered in these boathouses.
This home has great appeal as it offers a beautiful laid back, resort style experience whilst still feeling like a home. There was a form that had to be realised with the aesthetics of this home, so it was reverse engineered from outside to inside in a function-follow-form notion, but as it turned out, the result was a home that did not feel contrived or forced.
